The Tree in my Belly

The tree is already inside the nut,

Which has just been eaten by a

Squirrel, who, unsuspecting,

Is about to be consumed by a

Hawk,

Which means that

Trees can fly.

The hawk lives for another

Three years,

And when she dies her body

Lies in a cornfield,

Decomposing into the hummus

Which provides nutrients

For more corn to grow

The following year.

You buy a few ears

At a farmers market

Later that year,

Say Grace alongside the rest of your

Family

In communion,

And eat of the corn.

Which means

That you have consumed

Not only corn on the cob,

But a flying tree,

A hawk,

A squirrel,

The soil which nourished the corn,

And, of course,

The tree inside the nut.
